Dr. Benend KG

In 1947 Dr. Wilhelm Benend succeeded for the first time in synthesizing  a new medical product, pentosan polysulfate sodium. The first clinical trials of this substance, named Thrombocid due to its proven thrombolytic effects were found to be most promising. 

The company Dr. Will Benend K.G. formed for the production and marketing of Thrombocid was founded in 1949 by Dr. Wilhelm Benend and his brother. The first location being in Munich-Solln. In 1954 a low-molecular pentosan polysulfate sodium named accordingly SP 54 was produced. SP 54 is still successful today and is marketed as injections and capsules world-wide.

Further innovative and promising application areas were investigated and the company continued to flourish.

In 1963 the company bene Chemie GmbH was founded, and the independent family-owned enterprise of  Dr. Benend KG came into being. In 1986 bene Chemie was renamed as bene Arzneimittel GmbH.

Following  the approval of pentosan polysulfate sodium for the treatment of interstitial cystitis by the FDA in the nineties, the increased demand for the product in the USA resulted in the building of a new production plant in Munich-Geretsried in 2001. In 2003 the present company bene pharmaChem was founded as an independent company of the family-enterprise Dr. Benend KG.
